Central Louisiana State Hospital
PINEVILLE — It's been 115 years since the first steps were taken to create the Hospital for the Insane of Louisiana in Rapides Parish. The facility was established to serve mentally ill patients from 42 parishes in its early days and cared for more than 3,000 patients daily at its peak. It eventually became known as Central Louisiana State Hospital, which grew enough to operate independently with its patients helping to produce their own food, sew their own clothes and care for the property. The quieted grounds in the heart of Pineville retain their sense of seclusion to this day, but are a stark contrast from the activity Central State's thousands of residents and employees contributed to years ago.
